JOURNAL OF INVESTMENT CONSULTING
IMCA® was established in 1985 to deliver premier investment
consulting and wealth management credentials and world-class educational offerings through membership, conferences,
research, and publications. IMCA sets the standards and
practices for the investment management consulting profession
and provides investment consultants and wealth managers with
the credentials and tools required to best serve their clients.
IMCA is proud to serve more than 10,865 members and certificants worldwide, including 7,403 CIMA® certificants and 1,184
CPWA® professionals, as of November 30, 2016. The IMCA Code
of Professional Responsibility promotes and maintains the highest
standard of personal and professional conduct in investment
and wealth management. Adherence to the Code of Professional
Responsibility is required of all IMCA members, CIMA and CPWA
candidates, and IMCA-certified professionals.
Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®)
The cornerstone of IMCA is the Certified Investment Management
Analyst certification. The CIMA certification reflects experience,
education, examination, and ethical standards. Those who have
earned the CIMA certification have at least three years of experience in financial services, have passed an extensive background
check, have completed a demanding two-step, graduate-level
program of study, and have passed a comprehensive examination.
The CIMA certification is the first and currently the only financial
services certification in the United States to earn accreditation by
the American National Standards Institute under an international
personnel certification standard (ISO 17024).
Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®)
The Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA) certification facilitates
an advanced expertise in the life of wealth: accumulation, preservation and protection, and distribution. Those who earn this certification learn to identify and analyze challenges facing high-net-worth
clients (with a net worth of at least $5 million) and how to develop
specific strategies to minimize taxes, monetize and protect assets,
maximize growth, and transfer wealth.
IMCA’s certifications are offered in conjunction with three of
the top business schools in the United States, as well as one
leading business school in Australia: The University of Chicago
Booth School of Business; The Wharton School, University of
Pennsylvania; the Yale School of Management; and the Paul
Woolley Centre of University of Technology Sydney.
To further distinguish its members, IMCA is dedicated to the
advanced education of investment and wealth management
professionals. IMCA conferences hosted approximately 5,400
attendees in 2016. The IMCA Annual Conference Experience—
ACE offers headline general sessions and leading-edge
workshops covering topics such as technology, international
investments, and wealth management. IMCA’s specialty
conferences offer valuable content on a wide range of topics,
including investment theory, advanced wealth management,
and alternative investments. In 2016, the specialty conference
calendar included an Investment Consultants Conference, an
Advanced Investment Strategist Institute, a Private Wealth
Advisor Conference, and a Winter Institute. A “Focus On”
series, introduced in 2016, features day-long events built
around a singular important industry topic, such as the impact
of the Department of Labor’s proposed fiduciary standard.
In addition to onsite offerings, IMCA introduced a hybrid content
delivery model in 2016 that offers conference attendees a chance
to earn additional continuing education credit by watching video
recordings of sessions they may have missed in-person at the
conference. IMCA also offers three online certificate programs:
Applied Behavioral Finance, Fundamentals of Alternative
Investments, and Essentials of Investment Consulting, in addition
to interactive continuing education broadcasts focused on current
industry hot topics.
The association’s publications include Investments & Wealth
Monitor, a bimonthly educational magazine featuring professional contributors addressing everyday issues; the Journal of
Investment Consulting, which delves into the research and theory
of investments; and IMCA Research Quarterly, which provides
proprietary, in-depth research for IMCA members, by IMCA
members. A leadership blog, IMCA Investment Sense, provides
regular updates on important industry trends plus developments
on IMCA membership and certifications.
A thirteen-member board of directors, including four officers,
governs IMCA. The past chair serves one additional term
of office, and the executive director serves on the board ex-officio. Volunteer committees, such as certification, conferences,
membership, and wealth management, provide input to the board
and assist in directing the activities of the association.
For the advanced investment and wealth management
professional, IMCA is an ethical and trustworthy conduit
to cutting-edge investment strategies that maximize wealth
potential. For more information or to join, visit www.IMCA.org
